A Linux host machine means you are not going to be able to use ASP or ASP.Net, you would have to code your webpages in HTML or PHP.

A Windows host machine means you can use ASP, ASP.NET and HTML to code your pages.

Really it depends on what programming language you are going to use to make your pages. If you are just going to use HTML then a Linux host is probably fine for you, and it is most likely cheaper.

You don’t need Linux know-how to use Linux hosting – the control panels and FTP uploads will work the same whichever platform you use. The differences come with what facilities there are for server-side development. Typically, Windows hosts give you ASP, and Linux hosts give you Perl and PHP, and often Python as well. It is possible to use ASP with some Linux hosts if needed. On the database side, you’ll (again, only typically) get MySQL with Linux hosts and SQL Server with Windows hosts.

Most drop-in installable applications (blogs, wikis, forums, etc.) are written in PHP or Perl to work with a MySQL database, so that would make Linux the obvious choice to install them. Windows hosting is usually used by larger IT departments who already have some Windows developers available, but very large Internet companies usually use Linux (e.g. Amazon and Google use Linux, and Yahoo! use a similar free operating system FreeBSD). Hotmail also ran on FreeBSD before Microsoft bought it (and for a while after until it had got ported).

The web server typically used with Linux and FreeBSD, Apache, is the world’s most popular web server. It is also available for Windows, so you can run a local test version of your site without installing Linux.

My advice is, go with Linux unless you have a good reason not to.
